At Defyin’ Time in Mount Pleasant, TX, we understand that varicose veins and spider veins are a common source of frustration. These visible superficial veins can be unsightly and can even cause swelling, aching, and burning. We believe no one should suffer the embarrassment, discomfort, or difficulty and inconvenience of varicose veins. Our experienced staff in Mount Pleasant, Texas will work with you to develop a customized and personalized sclerotherapy treatment plan to improve the appearance of these common superficial vein problems.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a simple, fast, in-office treatment that has been in use since the 1930s to improve the appearance of varicose veins and spider veins. Treatments also work to improve or alleviate the associated symptoms of these conditions. Therapy is normally focused on the legs, as that is the most common location for the majority of varicose veins and spider veins. However, other parts of the body can also be treated as necessary.
How It Works
Treatments are performed by injecting a specialized chemical solution, commonly saline (salt water), into the problem veins in small amounts. The lining of the vessel becomes irritated and almost immediately collapses, effectively halting blood flow through the treated vein. The damaged vein will eventually become scar tissue and, over time, the body will eliminate this tissue naturally and safely, leaving the patient with clearer skin and improvement of previous painful symptoms.
In response to treatment, blood flow is automatically rerouted through other vessels as the superficial veins are eliminated. This results in improved blood flow to the treated area as well as to the feet.
Who Can Have Treatments?
As with all medical therapies, an initial consultation is required prior to beginning treatment. Candidacy for treatment varies and should be discussed with your Defyin’ Time treating physician.
As a general rule, pregnant women cannot undergo treatment; however, women who are taking birth control pills are eligible for therapy. Patients who have had a prior blood clot can be eligible, but this is decided on a case-by-case basis. Only our treatment specialists can determine if a patient can safely receive treatment.
Any vein that could potentially be used as a heart bypass graft is generally not eligible for treatment unless it has been previously determined to be unusable for a bypass procedure.
How Long Do Treatments Take?
Sclerotherapy treatments are done a medical office, not in a hospital setting. An average treatment session normally takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the number and location of areas being treated. Vein size and location are the primary determining factors for how large the treatment areas are and how many areas can be treated at one session.
While patients will be asked to follow a post-treatment regimen, such as wearing compression stockings and avoiding aerobic activity, there is essentially no downtime after treatment.
Preparing for Treatment
As with any medical therapy, you will be provided with all instructions prior to your first treatment appointment. Typically, certain medications should be stopped prior to treatment, including herbal medicines, over-the-counter medications, and any dietary supplements. It is also generally recommended that no lotion should be applied to the areas that are going to be treated.
We also suggest that NSAID pain relievers such as Advil and Aleve, aspirin, and other anti-inflammatory medications be avoided 24 to 48 hours before treatment. The use of Tylenol is usually fine, but patients should check with our office.
After Treatment Care
Tylenol may be used with permission of our providers. Showers are permitted, but they should be cooler than usual. Warm water and soap can be used to gently cleanse the treated areas.
Compression stockings should be worn following treatment. Patients can check with our staff to determine if their stockings are adequate; if not, we will offer suggestions for where appropriate compression stockings can be purchased. While strenuous exercise should be avoided, walking is not only recommended but encouraged following treatment.
Patients should consult their Defyin’ Time treatment provider for information on when to restart both prescription and nonprescription medication regimens.
What to Avoid After Treatment
The following should be strictly avoided for a minimum of 48 hours following sclerotherapy treatment:
- Hot baths
- Direct exposure to sunlight
- Hot compresses
- Saunas or hot tubs
- Over-the-counter NSAIDs and aspirin
- Aerobic activity such as exercise
How Effective Is Treatment?
According to studies, 50% to 80% of treated veins will be eliminated with each treatment. It may take a few treatments to get all the veins. While treatment success is not guaranteed, this is generally an effective and well-tolerated treatment.
Existing spider veins will be eliminated, and once they are, the same veins cannot reappear. However, in the event that new spider veins begin to appear, patients are welcome to return for further treatments.
